Prince’s Gambit by C。 S。 PacatRating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 TW: Slavery, mentions of rape, sexual violence, drugging, paedophilia, mentions of sexual abuse by family member。Having finished the second book in The Captive Prince trilogy, I still do not understand how people can dismiss it into a story that ‘fetishizes mlm' and I’m going to explain why (although you should see my review on the first book where I’m definitely more thorough)。The plot is much, much different than the one from the first book。 It bec Prince’s Gambit by C。 S。 PacatRating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 TW: Slavery, mentions of rape, sexual violence, drugging, paedophilia, mentions of sexual abuse by family member。Having finished the second book in The Captive Prince trilogy, I still do not understand how people can dismiss it into a story that ‘fetishizes mlm' and I’m going to explain why (although you should see my review on the first book where I’m definitely more thorough)。The plot is much, much different than the one from the first book。 It becomes clear that the central focus of the story is politics。 Which brings me to the main argument against the series (that’s not its fault really): it is being marketed as romance。 It’s very clear that the book is not just that。 We see Damen's inner conflict as he slowly starts to rise among the ranks of his Veretian troops, we see him being torn towards his want to return home and the loyalty he is starting to develop for Laurent。(“He was not here to run。 It was strange feeling to be unchained and riding with a group of Veretian soldiers of his own free will。” p。 1) Don’t get me wrong, there are still the ‘shocking’ and brutal elements that were part of the first book, but these have been integrated into the world building and I’ve already discussed them in my review of the first book。 However, there is romance in this book, in contrast with the first one。 But, here is where I do not understand the haters。 How can they say its fetishizing when it’s literally one of the slowest of burning romances I’ve ever read about? Not to mention that cliff-hanger that just makes everything more intense。 Damen and Laurent go through so much together in this book and it becomes clear that, outside of the Veretian palace, Laurent recognises and utilises Damen's strategic knowledge, and does not simply reduce him to a servant (“It frustrates me that I cannot put you to best use [when talking about making Jord Captain instead of Damen]。。。 “Do you think I was too proud to see it?” p。 60)。 He starts slowly trusting Damen, appreciating his input and not being biased (‘“What makes you think Kastor is the weaker man? You don’t know him。” “But I’m coming to know you,” said Laurent。’ p。 103)。 And if anything, once Laurent has already started defying the Veretian customs completely, he stops seeing Damen as a slave and even makes him his captain。 And when the romance actually reaches a peak point, it is not in any way forced。 Both characters fully consent and if anything, they appear to be careful and gentle, since it’s for both of them, a new territory。The thing I love most about this series is its characters。 Laurent is vicious as he is intelligent。 He gets angered easily and loses control。 But he also learns to open up slowly and allows for the reader to delve into his character。 On the other hand, Damen is known to be the ‘barbarian’ but proves that he, more often than not, has a very strategic mind and is also very honourable。 I love how there are many layers to the characters (and not just the protagonists)。 It really is no wonder that people who do not give up on the first book actually reach the point of loving the books。 The portrayal of problematic things (though on a smaller extent compared to the first book) does not, in any way, mean the author or the readers approves of it。 The world Pacat has created is a cruel one, clearly based off of the cruel world of Ancient Greece。 Also, friendly reminder that C。 S。 Pacat is NOT a straight cis woman。 Pacat is gender queer and goes by any pronouns and is also not straight。 So let’s not assume or gatekeep who gets to write stories that happen to include queer characters。 Of course, I am going to repeat that these books aren’t for everyone and I would not recommend them unless I’ve warned someone and given them an extended list of trigger warnings。 However, know that it’s better to not contribute in a discourse about a book when you only reproduce words by haters who have no idea what the books are actually about。 If this book isn’t for you, that’s perfectly understandable。 But understand the difference between a book dealing with heavy subjects and a problematic book that romanticises them。 。。。more
